چکیده

Introduction MRSA infection is a major health care problem. In 2008, as a component of a general strategy for infection prevention, a program to control MRSA was implemented in our ICU, consisting in pre-emptive isolation, rapid screening tests for identification of MRSA carriers and targeted decolonization with nasal mupirocin in addition to antiseptic body bathing. At the same time, screening of at-risk patients along with targeted isolation and antiseptic body washing was implemented in general wards.

Control of endemic methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a cost-benefit analysis in an intensive care unit.

CONTEXT Despite the success of some countries in controlling endemic methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), such programs have not been implemented for some hospitals with endemic infection because of concerns that these programs would be costly and of limited benefit. OBJECTIVE To compare the costs and benefits of an MRSA control program in an endemic setting. DESIGN AND SETTI...

Impact of active screening for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and decolonization on MRSA infections, mortality and medical cost: a quasi-experimental study in surgical intensive care unit

INTRODUCTION Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading pathogen of healthcare-associated infections in intensive care units (ICUs). Prior studies have shown that decolonization of MRSA carriers is an effective method to reduce MRSA infections in ICU patients. However, there is currently a lack of data on its effect on mortality and medical cost. METHODS Using a quasi-exp...

Cost savings of universal decolonization to prevent intensive care unit infection: implications of the REDUCE MRSA trial.

OBJECTIVE To estimate and compare the impact on healthcare costs of 3 alternative strategies for reducing bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit (ICU): methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nares screening and isolation, targeted decolonization (ie, screening, isolation, and decolonization of MRSA carriers or infections), and universal decolonization (ie, no screening an...

Fact, fiction, or no data: what does surveillance for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus prevent in the intensive care unit?

The polarizing debate about how to control antimicrobial-resistant organisms in hospitals continues to focus on methi-cillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the use of active surveillance cultures. In the United States, MRSA infection causes an estimated 18,650 deaths annually among hospitalized patients [1] and likely cost billions of dollars [2]. The National Nosocomial Infections ...

Epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization in a surgical intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a cause of healthcare-associated infections among surgical intensive care unit (ICU) patients, though transmission dynamics are unclear. OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of MRSA nasal colonization at ICU admission, to identify associated independent risk factors, to determine the value of these factors in active surveillanc...
